Abstract

Objectives: Evaluation of open cardiac surgery outcome of infants with body weight below 5kg on five years, from January 2009 to March 2014.
Methods: A retrospective review was performed for all infants below 5kg who underwent open cardiac surgery at Hue Central Hospital from January 2009 to
March 2014.


Results: In total of 2072 congenital heart diseases were operated, the number of infants below 5kg was 235 cases, 11,34%, in which 43% male, 57% female. The mean age was 120 ± 97,09 days, the mean weight was 4,5 ± 0,66 kg. The most disease was operated was VSD with 189 cases (80,5%). The different diseases included DORV (3,4%), TGA (3,4%), AVSD (2,9%)…. the mean operation time was 180 ± 75,74 minutes, the mean bypass time was 75 ± 42,03 minutes, the mean cross clamps time was 44 ± 29,08 minutes and the mean ventilation time was 48 ± 215,78 hours. The mean ICU length of stay was 6 ± 7,85 days. The overall mortality rate after operation was 5,9%. The main cause of deaths was low cardiac output syndrome (73,3%). The longest stay in ICU was post-operation of TGA (11,5 ± 2,34 days) and the lowest stay in ICU was post-operation of ASD ( 3 ± 2,3 days).*
Conclusion: The overall mortality rate of open cardiac surgery was 5,9%. The more complex cardiac disease, the more high mortality rate. The main cause of death after open cardiac surgery was low cardiac output syndrome.
