Abstract

A retrospective longitudinal case series study was performed at the UMC HCMC between September 2016 and September 2017. 189 patients age less than 15 years, who were inserted and removed bars, were included in the study. Safety outcome was evaluated by early and late complications after bar insertion, and complications after bar removal. Eficacy outcome was evaluated by clinical examinations, chest X- ray and patient’s satisfaction. There are 67,2% patients with male gender, the mean age was 8.4 ± 4.1 years. 74.6% of the patients had the pectus excavatum category of 1A and 61.4% were severe or very severe before surgery. The mean operating time of bar insertion and bar removal were 51.9 ± 23.4 and 39.3 ± 15.0 minutes, respectively. The mean hospitalization days after surgery of bar insertion and bar removal were 5.7 ± 1.2 and 1.0 ± 0.8, respectively. The mean bar remaining time was 27.4 ± 7.4 months. The percentage of early complications after bar insertion was 51.9%, most of them were self-limited. The percentage of late complications after bar insertion was 10.1%, among them, 6.9% of cases needed re- surgery. There were 2.1% of patients with complications after bar removal, all of them were self-limited. No death was reported. 93.6% of the patients have the eficacy outcome of good or very good. Patients’ satisfaction was 98.4%.
