Abstract

Pectus excavatum is a congenital deformity of anterior chest wall, in which the sternum and some rib cartilageson both sides developing abnormally, making the anterior chest wall concave. Surgical treatment for congenital pectus excavatum has only been performed since the beginning of the 20th century. Up to now, in the world and in Vietnam, Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum has been performed routinely in major centers and hospitals with specialized thoracic surgery. Classic Nuss procedure does not use thoracoscopy. Along with the rapid development of laparoscopic surgery, many centers have used assisted thoracoscopy in Nuss procedurefor pectus excavatum. With the creations of a surgeon in each center, thoracoscopy can be done on the right chest, the left side or both sides, especially in cases of severepectus excavatumor recurrent pectus excavatum. The thoracoscopy has made Nuss procedure more convenient, less complicated and more effective in treating pectus excavatum
