Abstract

Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Carotid endarterectomy for carotid stenosis is a proven method to reduce the incidence of cerebral infarction.

Subjects and methods: All carotid artery surgery patients at Dong Nai general hospital from January 2017 to October 2021. Retrospective case series.

Results: 64 patients were chosen, including 56 men (87.5%) and 8 women (12.5%), the average age is 69, 8 ± 9.8, 22 patients (34.8%) were symptomatic, 5 patients had carotid endarterectomy 2 times. Conventional endarterectomy with PTFE patch in 63 arteries (91.3%), eversion carotid endarterectomy in 6 arteries (8.7%). Post-operative results: 1 death due to bleeding (1.45%), 1 cerebral infarction (1.45%). Mid-term follow-up: 23.74 months. There was 1 death due to late bleeding after 2 months, 0 patients had ipsilateral cerebral infarction, 5 deaths from all causes (7.9%).

Conclusion: Carotid endarterectomy is a safe and effective method for stroke prevention. This method can be effectively deployed in tertiary hospitals.
