Assessment of sleep quality using the pittsburgh sleep quality index (psqi) in patients before cardiac surgery at Hanoi Heart Hospital

Abstract
Objective: Describe the sleep characteristics of preoperative cardiac surgery patients using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at Hanoi Heart Hospital.
Subjects and research methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 82 patients prior to cardiac surgery at Hanoi Heart Hospital from August 1, 2024, to February 30, 2025, using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire.
Results: 69.5% of patients had poor sleep quality, with 57.3% experiencing poor quality and 12.2% very poor quality. 37.8% of patients slept less than 5 hours per night, 36.6% had difficulty falling asleep, and 7.3% used sleeping pills. 78% were not affected by daytime activities. The average sleep efficiency among patients in the study was 72.88 ± 19.32.
Conclusion: Preoperative sleep quality was poor, with an average sleep duration shorter than recommended and a significant level of sleep difficulty. The average sleep efficiency was low, indicating ineffective sleep.
