Knowledge and attitudes in caring for children under 5 years old with pneumonia among mothers at the General Pediatric Department – E Hospital, 2025

Abstract: Objective: To describe the current status of knowledge and attitudes of mothers in caring for children under 5 years old with pneumonia at the General Pediatric Department – E Hospital in 2025 and explore some related factors. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 220 mothers whose children were hospitalized with pneumonia at the General Pediatric Department – E Hospital from February 2025 to April 2025. Results: 25.9% of mothers achieved adequate knowledge about the disease, 34.5% achieved adequate knowledge about child care, 21.8% achieved adequate knowledge about disease prevention, and 24.1% achieved adequate overall knowledge. A total of 65.9% of mothers demonstrated good attitudes toward caring for children with pneumonia. Conclusion: The mothers’ knowledge in caring for children under 5 years old with pneumonia remains low, while their attitudes are at a moderately good level. Factors associated with mothers’ knowledge included: maternal age group, education level, income, experience in child care, and information received from healthcare workers. Factors associated with mothers’ attitudes toward caring for children under 5 years old with pneumonia included: education level, experience in child care, and having adequate knowledge, with the latter group showing a significantly higher proportion of correct attitudes compared to those without adequate knowledge.
