Abstract

Introduction: Thoracic duct embolization in the treatment of chylothorax has been proven safe, effective, and minimally invasive. We report a case of successful coil occlusion of thoracic duct at Dong Nai General Hospital

Case report: a 32-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital because of shortness of breath and massive right pleural effusion. After pleural drainage, the diagnosis of chylous effusion was confirmed. The patient did not respond to medical treatment and received intervention to occlude the thoracic duct 1 week after admission. After intervention, the pleural fluid flow gradually decreased and stopped completely after 3 days. The patient had the drain removed and was discharged from the hospital on the 5th postoperative day. No early complications were recorded during the hospital stay.

Conclusion: Thoracic duct occlusion intervention is a minimally invasive method, safe, with few complications. The method is gradually becoming the first choice in the treatment of chylous pleural effusion. Initial implementation of this technique at Dong Nai General Hospital helps reduce the load on central hospitals, improving the capacity and reputation of the local team.
