Abstract

Objective: Evaluation of the effectiveness of the I-DECIDED tool kit in peripheral intravenous line care.

Method: Before-after intrevention study, including 4 phases: Phase 1 conducted a survey of the status of 200 peripheral lines on patients after spinal surgery from January 2024 to March 2024. Phase 2 trained 9 nurses in the Spine Surgery Department to use the I-DECIDED tool. Phases 3 applied the I-DECIDED tool to peripheral intravenous line care. From July 2024 to September 2024, phases 4 was conducted, re-evaluating 200 peripheral lines.

Results: After the intervention by training nurses in using the I-DECIDED tool in peripheral intravenous line care, the rate of peripheral phlebitis decreased significantly from 42,5% to 16%. The results also showed that the use of the I-DECIDED tool helped nurses comply with the assessment of the line more fully and clearly, such as the rate of peripheral intravenous lines with full information recorded by nurses increased from 41% to 82%. The rate of blood in the line and the rate of leakage at the catheter insertion site decreased by 3,6% and 6.4% respectively. Nurses were more aware of infection prevention due to reminders when following the I-DECIDED tool instructions in practice. In particular, the role of patients in participating in the assessment and care of the line was given more attention by nurses.

Conclusion: The I-DECIDED tool helps nurses make assessments and decisions about intravenous care easily and ensures patient safety.
